MAKADARA MP Mike Mbuvi Sonko has released three of his land title deeds to secure the release of Mombasa Republican Council officials.
The MP is now working in partnership with the Muslims for Human Rights and will sign a deal with the MRC officials after their release that they will be ready to dialogue and promote peace.
By yesterday, Muhuri officials had received the three land titles for the parcels of land in Ukunda, Golini and Kundutsi -- copies of which The Star has seen. The plots measure 1.8, 0,042 and 1.62Hacters.
“We have confirmed that all the titles are worth over Sh14 million and they should be able to assist us, since the court had directed that they should produce sureties of immovable items, said Muhuri Executive Director, Khalid Hussein.
Sonko and Muhuri told The Star that they hope to free the three MRC officials - chairman Omar Mwamnuadzi, spokesperson Rashid Mraja, secretary general Randu Nzai.
Muhuri has in the past been contracted by the government-former PC Ernest Munyi, to spearhead the talks between MRC and the government, in order to have their grievances addressed.
“After valuation, we shall take the same to the legislator for him to sign, and so, we hope by latest Friday, all the MRC officials will be out, before we embark on assisting some of the members,” Khalid added.
The official hailed Sonko’s initiative, and termed it as a brave act that will play a major role in ensuring peace is sustained in the Coastal region.
“We appreciate his efforts a lot and are grateful, but we still wonder why the local leaders didn’t even make any proposal to assist the MRC, despite backing them in many areas,” he said.
The Makadara MP had on Tuesday said that the government amnesty to MRC members should also ensure that they are not locked up in prisons, since that would mean it would be difficult to have them out.
“Pwani Ni Kenya, and that is a fact. We shall instead protect them so that they air out their grievances in the right manner. This will also include moving a motion to have them given land in the country, to settle their issues,” he added.
Mraja’s bond was reduced from Sh2M to Sh1M, while Mwamnuadzi and the rest who had a Sh3M bond, have had it reduced to Sh1M each with a surety of a similar amount.
