Several residential houses and business premises were flattened by bulldozers in Nyalenda, Kisumu County. Kisumu Town East Development Fund demolished the structures to pave way for the construction of a road.
Residents of Nyalenda ‘A’ lamented that they were not issued with a notice before their houses were demolished.
One of them, Mr Dan Osago, complained that areas that had initially been earmarked for demolition were left out and those that had not were brought down.
The demolitions started at around 10am and took over three hours. The demolitions are to pave way for a 2km road, to be constructed at a cost of Sh2.5 million.
Kisumu East CDF Secretary Elvis Omondi said they were not demolishing structures that block access of the road that extends to Nyaori Bridge.
He said plans to construct the road had been made a year ago, and the structures marked for demolition three weeks ago.
“We gave them notice three weeks ago that we would bring down the structures to allow easier access of the lower parts of Nyalenda,” he said.
