After the match on Wednesday(Nov 14) evening, ugly scenes characterized the Nelson Mandela challenge, the Zambia National Team Bus was ambushed by barbaric South African fans who started throwing stones thereby shattering the bus windows as they were leaving the FNB stadium to their hotel, Zambian players Kennedy Mweene and Felix Katongo were affected.The barbaric fans were angered by Chipolopolo’s win of the Nelson Mandela challenge hence vested their anger on the innocent Zambians instead of their team ‘Bafana’.
“Very sad that Zambian bus was stoned and Kennedy Mweene sustained a head injury. Has had stitches and is ok, but the incident was shameful” read the statement by FAZ.
South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematanani has apologized to his Zambian counterpart Kalusha Bwalya and the entire Football Association of Zambia for the attack on the African champion team bus.
Kennedy Mweene and Felix Katongo suffered injuries as the Zambian bus was hit by huge rocks which shattered the windows. The bus was attacked as the team left the FNB stadium for the hotel.
