Prime Minister Odinga And Vice-President Kalonzo Do Not Have To Attend Uhuru’s Inauguration

There is a Swahili saying that goes, “Mtu hakatai mwito, hukataa aitwalo.” (A person does not object to being called, he objects to what he is called for)
In the case of the CORD top brass, if they have chosen to give Uhuru Kenyatta’s inauguration a wide berth by flying south to the land of the venerable Madiba, it’s A-OK.
Anyone who has attended a Presidential inauguration can attest that it can be quite a dicey affair especially to the losers. Former President Moi and KANU found themselves in such a situation on the 29th day of December 2002.
The oft-christened ‘professor of Kenyan politics’ was on this day being lectured to. There were chants of “yote yawezekana bila Moi” and to drive the point home were projectiles made out of wet mud directed squarely at the man who, for over two decades, had reigned over a nation with an iron fist.
As if reacting on a cue, the new President Mwai Kibaki, and a man answering to the title, ‘the gentleman of Kenyan politics” was in no mood for social graces. He openly chastised the departing President in his formal acceptance speech much to the delight of an ecstatic crowd that evidently relished  an end of a great error.
We cannot talk much about the 2007 inauguration as there is nothing much to talk about, but 2013 swearing-in of Uhuru Kenyatta as the fourth President of Kenya, and the smooth transfer of power, should be a proud moment for all citizens of the republic.
Apparently, all the roads on Tuesday will  lead to Kasarani International Sports Center and by account of media reports, “mipango yote imekamilika.”
Uhuru Kenyatta will be sworn in as the President of Kenya having duly been elected by 50.07 of the electorate and affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Evidently, 49.93 of Kenyans who voted “NO” to Uhuru are sharing in the disappointment and pain exhibited by Raila Odinga and his coalition.
This crucial mass has a say where the slim majority have sway. But by the end of day, they understand well that ours is an adversarial democracy, there must be winners and losers.
They too, know that our democracy gives us a free hand in deciding and deciding not to decide. And if Raila, Kalonzo, and Wetangula  choose not to attend the inauguration of a Presidency, they have reservations about, they are definitely justified to skip it!
