Kanu will officially ratify its decision to support Prime Minister Raila Odinga for president.
This will happen when the party convenes the National Executive Council and the National Delegates Conference at end of the year.
Party Director of Elections, Ali Khan told The Standard On Sunday that the pronouncement by party chairman Gideon Moi to declare support for Raila remains final and only awaits approval from the party top organs.
“Earlier remarks attributed to our chairman still stands and will be endorsed by our members when the national conference is convened,” said Khan, speaking on phone.
Moi spoke when he campaigned for Tom Alila, who was vying for the just-concluded Ndhiwa constituency by-election.
Khan said there has been no registered party member who has come forward to declare interest in becoming the Kanu presidential flag-bearer, so the party would instead back Raila for the country’s top seat.
Meanwhile, the party has convened a special meeting for aspirants wishing to contest the various seats in the General Election on its ticket. The meeting is scheduled for October 1 at the party headquarters in Nairobi.
Khan told those who applied for party nominations and those who did not that they must register by September 30.
Comeback
With the ongoing power realignment ahead of the 2013 polls, Kanu is poised to stage a comeback with more popular parties rushing to seek friendly coalitions with minority parties.
In the run-up to the December 2007 elections, the two main parties reformed into large coalitions.
In August 2007, Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya split into the larger Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila, and the smaller Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya – now Wiper Democratic Movement – led by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
