The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) wants
the Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende to punish Makadara MP Gideon
Mbuvi alias Sonko for allegedly slapping Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai and
other parliamentary staff.
The lawyers
have written to Marende following an incident in which the AG and Mbuvi were
involved in a confrontation in Parliament buildings where Sonko is alleged to
have slapped the AG.
“This
is to call upon you to take the necessary action by invoking the necessary
powers bestowed on you by virtue of the Constitution, the National Assembly Act
and Standing Orders to address this unfortunate episode,” says part of the
letter from LSK.
“Members
of Parliament are State Officers and Article 75 of the Constitution makes
specific provisions regarding ‘conduct of State officers’ it provides that a
State officer shall behave, whether in public and official life, in private
life, or in association with other persons, in a manner that avoids demeaning
the office the officer holds.” Part of the letter adds.
The Monday
confrontation came after Prof Muigai wrote to the CID to investigate the
Makadara MP for extortion of money over a piece of land valued at Sh360 million
in Muthangari, Nairobi.
