Sunday, September 02, 2012 - An elderly woman is being held by police in Igembe North after she was caught performing female genital mutilation on a 14 year old girl in the area. The cut however turned fatal and the girl had to be admitted at Maua hospital.
Margaret Gitura, 70 is to said to be a quack in the area and performs all forms of illegal dealing among them abortions to teenage girls. Police in Igembe North were acting on a tip off by residents in the area who claimed to have seen the incident happen.
The girl who was bleeding profusely was rushed to Igembe North hospital where she is still recuperating. Medics said that she is responding well to treatment and may be released soon.
Gitura will be arraigned in court next week together with two other women who are said to have been involved in the incident.
