Kisumu youth on Wednesday held street protests, blocking roads and engaging police in a standoff after they stormed a hotel where a group of women were meeting.

The youth angrily protested what they believed to be a secret meeting to sell National Identity Cards (IDs) ahead of the October 17 presidential poll.

The angry youth chanted songs and lit fires along the road outside the said hotel as police held guard to prevent the chaos from escalating. Speaking to reporters, the women identified themselves as a religious group that was meeting at the hotel for prayers.

On Tuesday, a section of National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders claimed that Jubilee leaders are massively buying national identity cards from Opposition supporters.

According to the parliamentarians, the prices of the IDs range from Sh1,000 to Sh5,000, a price that would tempt any registered voter to sell their ID. The leaders further indicated that the scheme is ongoing in Kisumu, Bungoma, Busia and Kakamega counties.
