“They [Shabab] often sneaked into the town at night and they were well aware of the AU base,” VOA quotes a journalist in Al Adde.
Al Shabaab descended on a KDF camp in the region and overran it, leaving an unconfirmed number of casualties and injured soldiers.
The chief of general staff of the Kenya Defense Forces, Samson Mwathethe, confirmed that the militants took captive a number of soldiers whom they are using as human shields as the KDF pursues them to rescue and recover the dead and the injured.
Already a number of soldiers injured in the attack have arrived home and are receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Four bodies of some of the slain soldiers were flown into the country and received at Wilson airport by Defense Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo and Mwathethe.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is among leaders who have condemned the attack and promised to do all possible to wipe out the militants.
The international community has also condemned the attack and pledged support for Kenya and AMISOM as they help the government of Somalia stabilize.
