The politician made the declaration at the funeral service of his father that was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I have disbanded the Sonko Rescue team and will donate the vehicles to the Nairobi County Government,” Sonko said amid applause from the packed audience.
Sonko said he had arrived at this decision to repay all the “support and respect” he had received from Governor Evans Kidero since his father’s death. He did not substantiate.
Governor Kidero, who was in attendance, looked surprised at the declaration, but remained unmoved.
The Governor later revealed that the reconciliation with his arch rival was initiated by their parents.
“I want to thank my brother Evans Kidero for all the support he has accorded my family during this hard times. I promise to support him for the remaining two years (term of office). In fact, if there is some work remaining, I will even support you for another term,” Sonko declared.
The flamboyant politician however made a disclaimer stating; “You (Kidero) must however involve me in the running of the City affairs. We need to build the City.”
The Sonko Rescue Team is a fleet of vehicles and workforce that has been offering free services to city residents including transport, medication and water.
The team is complimented by a fully fledged website and a support centre.
