‘Broke’ Nameless begs for food from ‘Mama mboga’

I am not a groupie, but I am not going to lie and say celebrities do not fascinate me. They are amusing to watch, what with the way they believe they own the world and such. Well, most of them do deserve the accolades and adulation they get given that they share their unique talents with the whole world. I am on an epic journey with the Tusker Twende Kazi team, traversing through 8 countries to bring a bottle of Tusker Lager to Humphrey Kayange in London. For those not in the know, Tusker Twende Kazi is a reality show that will involve 50 East Africans-25 of them celebrities and hence my once-in-a-lifetime chance to know their habits, quirks and downright nasty.

I will lap this chance up. Athlete Ezekiel Kemboi is my first victim — muhahahaha. I have always wanted to do that and it does not reflect on Kemboi’s behaviour in any way during the two days he took part in the challenge. He is simply hilarious, and started off the show with a bang after running off to ‘London’ leaving his partner Michael Nduati behind. Kemboi was soon too tired to move. On reaching Taveta for the handover, he had to be carried by Nduati. Ezekiel and Michael handed the bottle to Nameless and his partner Wandia. Nameless (stunning as he is) had to beg for vegetables from a ‘Mama Mboga’ at a market in Taveta, since he did not have a dime to his name. And the bananas, sukuma wiki and potatoes came in handy for Nameless and his partner, as they handed them out in exchange for favours. Nameless rocked that basket, made it look cool to carry a kikapu. I am sure not too many men can pull that off.

What I observed of the musician is that he is confident, self-assured and does not need validation by announcing to all and sundry that he is the one and only Nameless. Next up was music critic and journalist Phillip Mwaniki who was teamed up with Miller. They took over the journey from Voi. The highlight of this challenge for me was when the poor men went into a café to beg for water and fries. They had inherited the basket of goodies from Nameless’ team and were willing to trade three potatoes for a meal. This did not work, and they had to stay hungry for the rest of the journey. Phillip and his teammate handed over to Ugandan musician Radio and his partner David. Remember how I mentioned that Nameless does not go about mentioning his name and bragging about the hits he has produced over the years? Well, Radio is the exact opposite and it seems his partner David is his biggest fan.

Not only did he introduce Radio, he also listed his songs to everyone who cared to listen. But hey, who I am to judge? It did get them around without too much hustle and that is exactly what the show is about, using your wit and whatever resources you have to get by and get that bottle of Tusker to Humphrey Kayange. Twende Kazi.
