The government will slash its spending on print advertising by 50 per cent and instead advertise on the internet, a Cabinet Secretary has said.

Speaking at a workshop in Nairobi yesterday, ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i revealed that the government is currently researching on ways to reduce its spend on newspaper advertisements.

“We will, with immediate effect, embark on spending more on digital advertising to reduce costs,” Dr Matiang’i said.

The government spent about Sh3.8 billion in advertising in print media in 2012.

The figure has risen to Sh2.8 billion in the period between June 2013 and now.

Government figures also show that total advertising expenditure for government institutions, State agencies and parastatals for the period between June 2012 and April 2013 was Sh2,8 billion.

The figure only includes advertisements placed on three main dailies.

The government will now join companies with huge advertising budgets that are now opting to advertise online. Some traditional big advertisers in print media whose budget accounted for more than 50 per cent of media’s advertising revenue like Kenya Airways, Safaricom, EABL have also increasingly gone digital.
