Nakuru traffic commandant Mary Omari also said 16 others were injured in the accident between Easy Coach bus and a trailer that took place at around 4:30pm.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed these figures in a tweet but initial reports had indicated that up to 10 people perished in the accident.
“FOUR Fatalities on the spot #SalgaaAccident on Eldoret – Nakuru h/way involving a Bus & two Trailers, Scores injured,” the tweet reads.
National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Chairman Lee Kinyanjui told Capital FM News that the accident was caused by the driver of the trailer who was, “free-wheeling,” at the time of the accident.
According to Omari the bus was bound for Eldoret and the trailer was heading down opposite direction and ferrying off-cuts.
The casualties of the accident were taken to various hospitals in Molo and Nakuru.
The accident comes just five days after at least five died in an accident between two buses in Keroka along the Kisii-Kericho highway.
It has also been just a little over a week since a dozen died in an accident between a train and an UmoInner bus in Mutindwa.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Engineer Michael Kamau has blamed reckless driving for the majority of accidents on Kenyan roads.
His Ministry has proposed a raft of measures to help end the road carnage on Kenyan roads including requiring Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers to go for refresher courses on driving.
The Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo also recently called for the banning of entertainment on PSVs in order to enable the drivers to better concentrate.
Those who board PSVs have also been encouraged to voice their concerns should they find that the driver of the PSV they’re on is driving recklessly.
“Passengers should desist from being ferried by reckless drivers. We urge members of public to report to us. I commend all those who tweet,” Kimaiyo tweeted.
Transport authorities have also resorted to suspending the licences of those bus companies whose drivers are found to be responsible for fatal road accidents but this is yet to bear results.
