Internet search giant Google celebrated Kenya's Mashujaa (Heroes’) Day by decorating its local homepage with a special doodle on Sunday.
The doodle, an artistic version of the Google logo, was designed by Esther Wambui Githinji, a pupil at Shree Cutch Leva Patel Samaj School, who won this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition.
The winning doodle depicted an athlete breaking a Kenyan flag finishing tape, with a colourful Nairobi’s skyline as background. It earned Wambui Sh800,000 worth of school fees and a Sh800,000 technology grant for her school.
The Doodle 4 Google 2013 competition themed ‘My Kenya’ was inspired by Kenya’s Jubilee year – a celebration of 50 years since independence.
October 20 is celebrated as Mashujaa Day across Kenya to honour the heroes and heroines who gallantly fought for the country’s independence.
Google has previously observed Jamhuri Day, the Masai Mara wildebeest migration and the March 4 General Election with doodles on its homepage.
