The suspects’ accomplices who were inside the bank struggling to force open a safe at the time police arrived managed to escape. They were part of a gang that broke into Barclays Bank in Kawangware on Saturday night.
Among the suspects arrested was a man hired by Bob Morgan Security to guard the premises.
Those who escaped took away Sh330,000 while those arrested were found with coins amounting to about Sh3,000.
The suspects were resting in the vehicle as they waited for their accomplices to break the safe.
“Fortunately for us, they drunk themselves silly as they waited in a car they intended to use as a getaway. We found them with bags used by the bank to store coins.
The others who were inside saw the police and escaped,” said the head of criminal investigations in Dagoretti Joseph Ondori. Initial investigations showed the gang entered the bank after breaking a back door.
The amount stolen was stored in one of the tills used by tellers and there was more money in the safe that the gang was not able to open. Police found gas cylinders and welding materials the gang used in an attempt to open the safes’ locks.
