The BBC online says the 95-year-old had recovered well enough from an infection to leave the hospital where he has been for three months to return to his home to be cared for by his family.
He had been admitted with a recurring lung infection on June 8. His condition was last week described as ''critical but stable'', and there has been no official update on his health since then.
There has not yet been other confirmation of Mandela's discharge.
The news follows mystery about his exact condition, with reports varying during his stay in hospital.
In late June South African President Jacob Zuma cancelled a visit to Mozambique amid growing concerns for Mr Mandela, who was then described as gravely ill. It was confirmed at the time that Mr Mandela was requiring breathing assistance.
However the former president rallied and by late July had undergone a remarkable turnaround.
"He's still critical but stable," Mr Mandela's grandson Ndaba Mandela in an interview with Fairfax Media. "But what I can say is that he is a lot more responsive. And what I mean is he is a little bit more alert, he is a little bit more aware, his movement's a little bit stronger, he's able to look around the room and that kind of thing."
