A woman, 61, gave birth for the first time to twins, according to hospital records.

A Brazilian woman, Antonia Leticia Rovati Asti, gave birth for the first time, a week after turning 61-years-old.

The late in life pregnancy was made possible in part by Dr. Orlando de Castro Neto, a specialist in assisted reproduction.

Now that the twins were born, Neto thinks the biggest challenge of the new mother will be society's perception of the surroundings to giving birth later in life. But the stigma did not affect his decision to help Asti.

"Age does not matter at all," her doctor, Orlando Castro Neto, said. "The only condition is that a woman has a uterus."
Her 10-year-old frozen embryos, left over from a failed IVF attempt in 2002, were fertilized with sperm from her husband.

"Embryos are valid for 10 years, more or less," Neto said, "and they were coming to an end. She said she wanted to use them to try again."
An artificial insemination resulted in the birth of Sofia and Roberto at Cesarean SaoLucas Hospital, in Santos.

Asti, initially approached doctors with her desire to become a mother in 1992. After previous failed attempts to get pregnant, Asti decided to adopt, but was rejected because of her age.

This was the last chance for the aging couple to have children together. Now the parents have no intention of taking for granted Sofia and Roberto.
"I'm going to love these children very much and work hard to put food in their mouth," her husband said in the delivery room after birth.
