ICC Judges to Vote on William Ruto, Joshua Sang Trial Venue

The International Criminal Court (ICC) judges will decide by a two-thirds majority vote on whether or not to hold Deputy President William Ruto and radio journalist Joshua Sang trial in a State other than the host state.

Trial Chamber V(a) Monday recommended to The Hague based court’s presidency to have the sittings held either in Kenya or Tanzania for the opening and possibly subsequent hearings.

The Chamber’s presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji said in a statement: “The plenary of Judges will look into the chamber's recommendation to conduct the opening, and possibly other hearings in Kenya or Tanzania. The plenary will look into the feasibility and whether this would serve the interest of justice.”

The recommendation was made by the chamber after a request by the Defence on January 24 this year and after obtaining observations from the parties and participants, as well as the relevant authorities.

The Court also stated that irrespective of where the Chamber might hold specific hearings, the case will be under the jurisdiction of the ICC and presided over by ICC Trial Chamber V(a).
