Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua said his government will purchase 150 police vehicles to enhance security. He said unless insecurity was tackled, no meaningful development projects would be undertaken because wananchi would be pre-occupied with defending themselves against criminals rather than concentrating on building the nation.

He was speaking on Monday when he received Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi who paid him a courtesy call. He promised to work with police to ensure Machakos enjoyed peace because investors had promised to inject more than Sh56 billion to make it a 24-hour economy. Mutua said there was need to strengthen the relationship between Machakos and Wajir as their economic interests intertwined.

He said Kenya Meat Commission, located in Machakos, provided a ready market for cattle from Wajir and neighbouring counties. Abdullahi, who was accompanied by his deputy Abdihafid Yarou, said he was ready to work with the Machakos governor to boost the economy of both governments. He said with concerted efforts from the two governors, wananchi would receive quality service.

Meanwhile, all Machakos County Assembly members have received their salaries for March and April, the county Finance Minister George wa Luka has said. He said salaries for March were paid in accordance to gazette notice of March 1, 2012 where each member was supposed to be paid for only 19 days. He was answering the member for Kangundo central Ward Joseph Itumo who had sought to know the position of salary payments and budget allocation to the county.

At the same time, the government of Machakos has defended the purchase of 15 vehicles for use by top government officials. George wa Luka wrote a letter to the members of the County Assembly explaining the purchase of the vehicles. In the letter seen by The People, the minister said the office of the controller of budget had already approved expenditure for all the 47 counties for the period of March to June 2013.

“The funds released were used for renovation of the county offices, the governor offices and all other expenditure including the purchase of the 15 motor vehicles,” the letter said. He said the expenditure was properly executed in accordance with Public Procurement and Disposals Act 2005.

The county assembly members had written a letter on 14th May 2013 seeking clarification from the government on procurement and purchase of the of the 15 Subaru Outback model of vehicles being used by county Cabinet Secretaries. He said their account is operational with a balance of Sh21 million budget allocated for the period of March to June 2013 is intact and available for use.-The People
