89-Year-Old Woman Who Worked for 3 Kenyan Presidents Seeks Her Retirement Dues

An 89-year-old Kiambu woman has appealed to President Uhuru to help her get her dues. Magdalene Wangui said she worked for presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi at Harambee House and State HouseNairobi for 29 years without pay.

Wangui, who lives in Riabai village in abject poverty, was sacked after the Kibaki government took over power in 2002.

“I have work documents and a State House badge. I used to make tea there,” she said.

Wangui said no-one has bothered to address her plight even after her story was aired by several media houses.

Her daughter, Lucy Wanjiru, said they have written several letters to Harambee House and Moi requesting Wangui’s dues in vain.

“My mother is an aged woman. We want justice to prevail and our mother to get paid since she lives under poor conditions,” said Wanjiru.

On Tuesday, when Wangui heard Uhuru would make a stopover at Kirigiti shopping centre on his way from Nyeri, she waited for him, hoping to speak to him.

She also asked Kiambu Town MP Jude Njomo to help her get the President’s attention.

However, Uhuru’s security detail turned her away.

“I was hoping to ask Uhuru whether he remembers me cooking tea at State Housewhen he was young,” Wangui said.

She said she “will not lose faith” that she will meet the President one day and get her dues.
