President Uhuru Wrong on Seeking out Raila and Kalonzo on Cabinet Appointments

Uhuru Kenyatta is making a mistake on reaching out to former Raila with offers for cabinet and principle secretary slots for Raila’s sycophants. President Uhuru won the election fair and square according to the IEBC and Supreme Court and should take over the running of the country with the powers vested in him. While it may seem as a sign of good gesture, but it may also be seen as a sign of weakness.

One of the reasons why Mitt Romney lost the presidential election last year in America , came during the second presidential debate in which Mitt Romney claimed during the debate that he requested ‘binders full of women’ as governor of Massachusetts. The comment went viral. The American women voters concluded the remarks were further evidence of how out-of-touch the GOP candidate was with women. Does this mean Uhuru is also out of touch with the rest of the country that in order to get qualified individuals from these regions of the country he must reach out to Raila and Kalonzo?

Indeed the new constitution states that all presidential appointments must reflect diversity. Uhuru can do this without the help of Raila or Kalonzo. Uhuru needs to pick new fresh blood in areas he performed poorly. People whom he knows are strong enough and can help him in 2017 re-election campaign. By offering Kalonzo and Raila to nominate names for him, this will not help him. First of all who will these people pledge their loyalty to? Will they secretly undermine the president and his agenda? Obviously come 2017 , these people will abandon Uhuru team and either support Kalonzo or Raila should Raila or Kalonzo decide to run again. Should the same people become very successful in their appointments, both Raila and Kalonzo will take credit and use it against the president come 2017. Or will Uhuru blame Raila and Kalonzo if these people become incompetent?

My suggestion to His Excellency president Uhuru, is to select his own team. People who will carry out his agenda for the country and will improve his chances of being re-elected in 2017. Select people the Kenyan people will hold you personally responsible for should they fail to deliver. Raila and Kalonzo’s sycophants are not going to achieve this for him. A good example of someone from Luo Nyanza whom can be a strong cabinet secretary and can withstand Raila onslaught is Raphael Tuju or Charity Ngilu from Ukambani. Mudavadi and Wamalwa are not good representatives of Western kenya as they both are still nursing their presidential ambitions and Uhuru could find himself running against them in 2017.
