A suspected female gangster and three men raided a popular hospital in Nairobi and robbed it of Sh222, 000 in an early morning attack.
The woman and her accomplices went to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Hurlingham area posing as patients before they struck, grabbing the money from a cashier on Monday at 2 am.
According to Nairobi Area police boss Benson Kibui, the gang arrived at the hospital at about 2 am seeking “medical attention”.
The woman walked in, aided by her accomplices, claiming to be pregnant and in serious pain. When they were allowed into the hospital, some of the gang members walked to the cashier’s office.
“As some walked to the cashier, others remained and held the guards who were stationed at the gate hostage. Those who were inside the hospital, including the woman, grabbed Sh222, 000 at gun point and escaped,” said Kibui.
The hospital, which is largely deals with gender violence related cases, said the matter is now under police investigations.
The police boss said the same female has been cited in two other carjacking incidents that were reported in the city.
“Last week, the same woman and her accomplices robbed a taxi driver of his car in Guru Nanak area and we are yet to recover the car,” said Kibui.
Kibui said a team of detectives has been formed to pursue the gang with an aim of arresting them for interrogation and prosecution.
Last week a woman who was suspected to have been a gangster was shot dead by police in Dandora area, Nairobi and a gun recovered from her in what was said to be a botched robbery.
Police and witnesses said the slain middle-aged woman was in the company of eight other men. They are said to have carjacked a matatu in Kariobangi South and robbed the passengers.
Kibue wants matatu operators to take the initiative of screening passengers boarding their vehicles as part of efforts to contain such attacks. He said they also plan to launch an operation against muggers who are on the rise in the city.
