Kidero sets aside Sh2.5b for hospitals

Nairobi governor Evans Kidero
Nairobi City has set aside Sh2.5 billion to upgrade more than ten dispensaries to district hospitals in a bid to improve access to healthcare.

Governor Evans Kidero said the provision of health services was a pillar in their campaign manifesto, adding that he wanted to fulfil the plan by elevating smaller dispensaries to Level Four hospitals.

“I will upgrade 20 dispensaries to fully fledged hospitals, build one hospital in the western side of Nairobi to upscale services and upgrade Pumwani Maternity Hospital to referral status,” said Kidero.

In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Jonathan Mueke, Dr Kidero noted that the money would be used towards health provision and capacity building during his first term in office and would be doubled from the second year. This, he said, formulates part of his agenda that he had enshrined in his seven pillars of management for the capital. “If you can recall the seven pillars of my agenda for Nairobi County, I can now assure you that you will enjoy better health services within the first six months of my reign in office,” said Kidero.

He at the same time directed that the county’s Public Health Department should scale up services at Mukuru Health Centre to offer curative and maternity services.
