Nakuru’s county administration came up with new dress codes to the national assembly that they say must be adhered to by the staff, members of the county assembly and journalists. The dress codes are said to be a suit and tie for anyone who would like to access the county assembly. For women, they said skirt suits or trouser suits are preferred. It is known that journalists are often seen dressed in jeans and t-shirts when they go for county assembly meetings but the administrators said if they did not adhere to the new dress code set for everyone they will not be allowed in the county assembly sittings.

On Tuesday ,journalists were barred from the county assembly sittings for having not dressed up appropriately. The county security officers had been given instructions not to allow the to join the county assembly meetings unless they were dressed in suits and ties and they did exactly that. The meeting aim was to elect the deputy speaker of the county assembly and it went on without journalists. The new deputy speaker elected was Naisut’s ward representative, Samuel Tanui.

Susan, the county assembly speaker said that the new assembly dress code was put to prevent slipping down in the chamber. It was aimed at ensuring that everyone participating in the county assembly debates is smartly dressed in a business attire that shows a higher level of seriousness even when it comes to journalists. We are only left to wonder whether this new county assembly dress code will be implemented especially by the journalists or it will fail.
