The government has announced a significant reduction in the intensity of hate speech messages in all blogs.
Mary Ombara, Director of Public Communications at the Media Monitoring Committee said it has linked this reduction to positive response by bloggers to messages of reconciliation by leading politicians.
Ombara said however, that the reduction in intensity does not imply the reduction in the frequency of postings of hate messages on social media.
“What is notable is the muting of the hate speech. This is critical in our campaign as it supports the premise that it is the political class that perpetuates hate speech in this country,” Ombara said.
The committee has also called for an end to messages of “ethnic economic sabotage” in which bloggers call for block rejections of produce from specific regions.
Ombara said the committee has established a correspondence between the committee and the managements of Facebook and Twitter and are hoping this will result in a major breakthrough on curbing hate speech on social media.
