Kenya’s national football team Harambee Stars jetted back in the country earlier today to a colorful reception at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after their impressive 1-1 draw against African champions Nigeria Super Eagles in Nigeria on Saturday.
Traditional dancers received the team at the airport along with Kenya Football Association president Sam Nyamweya and other KFA officials. Also on hand to receive the team was Nairobi Senator-Elect Mike Mbuvi Sonko who awarded the team Sh1 million. Sonko in addition handed a Sh100,000 prize to Francis Kahata, the lone goal scorer for the Stars. Sonko has earlier pledged the award if the Stars won the game, but said the team’s impressive performance that forced a draw against the Super Eagles prompted him to hand out the pledge.
Sonko, along with Saw Nyamweya urged the government and corporations to offer more support for the national team, saying the government has not given the team good support in the past. Nyamweya also said the KFA would file a protest with FIFA regarding the team’s poor reception and treatment by the Nigerian football federation on their arrival to Nigeria for the match. The poor treatment by the Ngerians triggered an online war between Kenyans and Nigerians last week.
