Hospital X-rays showed that the couple had the razor blades, which ranged in size with the biggest as large as a thumbnail in their stomachs. The co-worker who ate one of the doughnuts suffered cuts to her mouth.
Leazer-Hardman, 39, and Condor, 35, wanted to extort money from Smith’s Food and Drug store by claiming they had eaten the tainted food, according to police who later arrested them. Police said they received a call from the couple claiming they found a triangular piece of sharp metal in a doughnut.
Investigators became suspicious because the doughnuts were in a tamper proof packet and shipped from out-of-state. Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter said that as detectives looked at the evidence, it became clear that ‘things weren’t adding up.’ Later on, they found out that the suspects had purposely eaten the broken razor blades.
Police said Condor later admitted that the two had planted the metal in the donuts so they could get a settlement from the store because they were both in debt.
They have been charged with filing a false police report and assault.
