President elect Uhuru Kenya and Former retired President Moi |
In his message of congratulations to Uhuru, Moi said Kenyans had made a decisive decision on who they wanted to be their president.
“The decisive victory is a testimony in the faith and trust the people of Kenya has in Uhuru,” he said.
Moi who expressed his support for Amani coalition presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi during the campaigns said by voting in Uhuru, they showed they trusted him.
The former president thrust Uhuru into the political arena in 2001 after he persuaded nominated MP Mark Too to step down to allow the president-elect to be nominated to parliament.
In July 2002 Moi went ahead to name Uhuru as his preferred Kanu Presidential candidate which was seen by many as an attempt by the former president to rule by proxy and led to rebellion in Kanu culminating to defeat of Kanu in the December polls.
Then, Moi said his choice for Uhuru was driven by his desire to see a united country and that politics should not be used to drive a wedge among different ethnic communities in the country.
The former President deputized Mzee Jomo Kenyatta-Uhuru’s father for 12 years before assuming leadership when Kenyatta passed on in August 1978.
