Chief Justice Willy Mutunga earlier today promised Kenyans that the Supreme Court will exercise great fairness and impartiality when deciding the petition opposing the results of last Monday’s Presidential election.

Mutunga added that he and the other five Supreme Court judges would decide the petition within the timeline set out in the constitution. The other judges of the Supreme Court are Smokin Wanjala, Philip Tunoi, Jackton Boma Ojwang’, Mohamed Ibrahim and Njoki Ndung’u.

The CJ made the comments while receiving the official tally of election results from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The results released by IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan on Saturday declared Jubilee flag bearer Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the election after a close fought campaign against CORD’s Raila Odinga.

The CJ also thanked Kenyans for displaying maturity and keeping calm during the election period. Mutunga said that the proceedings of the Supreme Court hearing the election petition would be broadcast live on national TV so as to encourage justice and transparency.

CORD unveiled its team of lawyers to present its petition on Sunday. The lawyers are former AG Amos Wako and Ministers Moses Wetang’ula, James Orengo, Mutula Kilonzo and Ababu Namwamba.

Raila has said that CORD will respect the judgment of the Supreme Court.
