Lawyers have condemned the violence that killed 16 people, including police officers and polls officials, during Monday’s General Election.

In a preliminary report on the polls, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemned the Sunday attack in Miritini, Mishomoroni in Mombasa which killed 12 people, among them six police officers.

The attack was blamed on the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).

The LSK also cited a similar ambush on a police officer and a polling clerk in Chumani in Kilifi county.

The attackers, again suspected to be MRC members, opened fire on the officials, killing them instantly.

The report, signed by LSK chairman Eric Mutua also condemned various incidents of violence in Likoni, Kaloleni and Chonyi.

“Likoni, Kaloleni and Chonyi in Mombasa experienced various forms of disturbances,” the report said.

It also cited an explosion at an Anti-Shifta Administration Police Camp in Garissa and a shooting in the same county which left two people, including a Kenya Red Cross employee, dead.

“In Bulampya-Mandera, two grenade attacks were reported with no casualties,” the report noted.

“At least one person was injured in a blast targeting a voter registration centre at Ifo refugee camp near Kenya-Somalia border. Police confirmed the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device planted in a voter registration centre at the refugee camp,” it said.

The report exposed cases of bribery, buying of voters’ and identity cards mainly affecting Kilifi, Kitui, Kakamega, Kisii, Nyamira, Mombasa and Nairobi counties.

The LSK further notes incidents of violence and intimidation in the party nomination and campaigns throughout the country, including the storming of IEBC offices by some aspirants and the distribution of inciting leaflets in parts of the country. -Daily Nation
