Kenya Police Boss David Kimaiyo Bans Political Rallies, Prayer Gatherings

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has said police will not allow political meetings and warned against planned demonstrations, which he described as a threat to peace.

Kimaiyo also condemned the Friday incident where students of Kenyatta University went on rampage and destroyed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) materials within the institution’s premises.

“Investigations are on-going to establish the cause and address it accordingly. Kenyatta University was a tallying centre for the IEBC and the materials were legally there, and therefore the students involved in the incident will be dealt with,” he said.

Kimaiyo banned all demonstrations and prayer gatherings outside the church or mosque or sanctuaries and called upon the religious leaders to restrict their prayers to their respective worship places.

“We are privy to the information that there are people who are planning to conduct demonstration in the city and throughout the country, these demonstrations are illegal and members of public are advised to keep off from them,” said Kimaiyo in a statement read on his behalf by Administration Police spokesman Masoud Munyi.

“This is not acceptable since it has the potential to generate unnecessary tension and strain the harmonious existence currently enjoyed by our people,” he added.

Inspector General said they were discouraging gatherings outside worship places so as to disengage the people from the election mood, and avoid causing annoyance or breach peace to others.

“The statement therefore cancels the prayer meeting at Uhuru Park that was to be attended by the Presiden elect Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto”

Prime Minister Raila Odinga had also planned a series of nationwide rallies to “thank supporters” after the elections.

Kimaiyo also warned those spreading hate messages on social media platforms.

“These people circulating these messages are either making derogatory comments or negative stereotyping of communities and individuals; the trend is unhealthy for our cohesion and most importantly to our national security”, read part of the statement.
