Hospital gives patients chance to vote

Discharged patients who gave their IDs as collateral for unpaid bills at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret have until 5pm on Friday to collect them for voting.

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has waived 50 per cent of their bills and they will now be required to pay the rest to get back their IDs.

MTRH Deputy Director Clinical Services Dr Wilson Aruasa said the move is aimed at ensuring that voters participate in the Monday General Election.

He said they also aim at recovering the hospital’s outstanding revenue in unpaid medical bills amounting to over Sh300 million.

Dr Aruasa asked the affected people to take advantage of the offer.

“The process, which began on Monday and ends today at 5pm to ensure patients participate in the historic General Election,” he said.

Although he could not immediately establish the number of patients affected he said that the response was overwhelming.

The doctor said they were expecting even more payments before the close of business today.

“The Sh300 million owed to the hospital is huge and dates back more than ten years,” Aruasa clarified.

Missed out

He stated that patients who would have missed out on the opportunity would be required to pay the total outstanding amounts.

“The amount owed to us by individuals’ is amounting to not less than Sh10,000 a person,” he said.

Uasin Gishu URP governor aspirant Jackson Mandago who has in the past criticised the hospital for detaining patients’ IDs asked the concerned patients to take advantage of the offer through his Facebook page.

“Good news from MTRH to residents, if you owed MTRH any amount and your ID was held, they have agreed to waive half the amount so you can collect your ID to be in a position to vote,” he said.

He added: “Inform our people in rural areas who’s IDs are in MTRH that now they can pay only half what they owed. Kindly spread the message.” -The Standard
