Police have arrested five suspects accused of being involved in the brutal gang rape of a Swiss tourist. The woman was on camping tour with her husband in an Indian forest in the central state of Manhya pradesh.

The accused are to appear before a magistrate Monday, deputy inspector general of police, Dilip Arya, told Reuters

In another incident three months ago, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was gang-raped and beaten up in a moving bus. She was later thrown onto the street but died while undergoing treatment in hospital.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in India. However according to police estimates only four out of ten rapes are reported since the victims fear being shamed by the community.

The Swiss woman and her husband were on a three-month holiday in India and were touring the state by bicycle. They departed from

Orchha on Friday and had camped in a forest near Jatia Village when they were attacked by the group of men carrying wooden sticks. The husband was beaten up, tied to a tree and then they raped the woman.

The arrested men are aged between 20 and 25 years and belong to a local tribe known as the Kanjar.

The woman and her husband have since left the state and are now at the Swiss embassy in New Delhi.

The Swiss ambassador in India, Linus von Castelmur, has spoken to the couple and has demanded a swift probe of the incident.
