Three ODM supporters are nursing serious injuries at Matata Hospital in Oyugis town after they were attacked by a gang of rowdy youths during a rally.

The victims, who include a former MP’s bodyguard, suffered head injuries and were rushed to the hospital on Tuesday evening.

Rowdy youths started hurling stones when ODM Homa Bay gubernatorial candidate Cyprian Awiti and area women representative candidate Galdys Wanga were addressing supporters at a rally.

The youths, alleged to be supporters of one of the politicians in the area, initially blocked the road to prevent the ODM caravan from entering the venue.

After the incident, Awiti led the campaign team to Oyugis Police Station where they recorded a statement.

Others present were parliamentary candidates Joseph Oyugi Magwanga (Kasipul), Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul) and Opondo Kaluma (Homa Bay Town) and Kasipul Ward Representative aspirants.

Wanga condemned the violence and accused some of the politicians who are contesting various seats under CORD of instigating it.

Taint ODM

“It is very unfortunate that we are being attacked over reasons which we do not know. I suspect this is just a plan by some of our fellow politicians who are being used to taint the name of ODM in this region,” Wanga said.

The violence saw a series of rallies planned to campaign for ODM nominees in Homa Bay County called off. Traders also closed their businesses fearing looting.

Rachuonyo South OCPD Naomi Ichami said they had launched investigations to net the masterminds of the chaos.

“They (ODM candidates) are alleging that the youths were incited by one of the CORD candidates but we are investigating the incident,” Mrs Ichami said.
