Miguna Miguna Endorses Uhuru Kenyatta for Presidency

A former aide of Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mr Miguna Miguna, on Saturday endorsed Jubilee Coalition leader Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency.

Mr Miguna said although Jubilee was not the “cleanest,” it was less tainted than Mr Odinga’s Cord.

Speaking at the launch of his new book, Kidneys for the King: De-forming the Status Quo in Kenya, Mr Miguna said: “I’m backing Uhuru. I want him to give Odinga a thrashing.”

Mr Miguna said more members of Cord were involved in scandals than those of Jubilee.

Mr Miguna said Mr Kenyatta should not be blamed for the acquisition of land by his father and that the only blemish in his career was a typographical error in the Budget when he was Finance minister.

He also said it was also wrong for people to criticise Mr Kenyatta for being Kikuyu.

Mr Miguna, however, said if he was in Mr Kenyatta or former Eldoret North MP William Ruto’s shoes, who are facing crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court, he would not have run for the presidency. “But Uhuru Kenyatta is entitled to his decision,” he said.

He said indications from conversations with foreign diplomats were that Kenya could face sanctions and trade repercussions if Jubilee wins. He said although the envoys did not say whether their countries would recall their ambassadors and cut diplomatic ties, “they could”, adding that the United Nations Environment Programme headquarters at Gigiri could be moved.

Mr Miguna said he had told the ICC he had evidence that could implicate Mr Odinga in the 2007 post-election violence but they said they were only interested on information touching on the four people facing trial.

He said Mr Odinga, who was the ODM candidate in 2007, and President Kibaki, who was Commander in-Chief of the armed forces, should have been charged.

Kidneys for the King is a sequel to Mr Miguna’s bestseller, Peeling Back the Mask. It brings into focus the controversies, mis-steps and missed opportunities during the constitutional review as well as what the author perceives as deliberate efforts to subvert the Constitution.

Mr Miguna uses his second book more or less to respond to occurrences that followed the launch of his first one last year July and hits back at critics who saw his first book as a political weapon to down Mr Odinga after the two fell out.

Mr Miguna had claimed he “could take all the leaders to The Hague” but in the new book says he “misspoke and made a serious error”.

“I allowed myself to be carried away by the excitement and heat of the moment, at least regarding those I claimed I could take to The Hague. It was a serious error,” he says in trying to put the record straight. - Sunday Nation
