P1 teachers are set to face tough challenges following the Government’s plans to replace P1 certificates with a Diploma curriculum.
This was announced by the Education Permanent Secretary Prof. George Godia in a speech read on his behalf by the Education Senior Deputy Secretary Agatha Oyula during a graduation ceremony at Tambach Teachers Training College (TTTC) in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
“The curriculum development is at an advanced stage”, he said
In defending the Government’s move, the PS said that this was to improve the quality of education in primary schools which forms the basis for future learning. The PS also assured children living in Arid and Semi Arid Lands and urban informal settlements of the government’s commitment to ensuring they get basic and quality education.
However, the PS acknowledged the challenges his Ministry is facing of underfunding, but pledged to soldier on despite the challenge. He announced the Ministry’s work in progress of new TTCs construction in Bondo, Kitui, Narok and Kisii at a cost of sh120 million.
