Eight nurses charged with vandalism in Nyeri

Eight nurses were charged in a Nyeri court with malicious damage of property belonging to two public hospitals.

The eight, who pleaded not guilty, are accused of damaging the property when they went to confront nurses who had refused to join the strike.

Simon Warui, Wilson Wachiuri, Jane Wangari, Alice Wangui, Lucy Wairimu, Pheobe Maina, Joyce Mutuota and Agnes Wango denied maliciously damaging government property at Gatitu Health Centre and Aguthi Dispensary located near Nyeri town when they appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Shadrack Okato.

In the first charge, they are accused of destroying thermometers, window panes and patient registers valued at Sh3,400 at Gatitu Dispensary last Monday while in the second charge, they are accused of destroying three thermos flasks valued at Sh3,600 on the same day at Aguthi Dispensary.

The nurses were released on Sh30,000 bond each with a similar surety or a cash bond of Sh15,000 each pending the hearing of their case on March 8 with a mention set for February 19.

Tens of their colleagues jammed the courtroom to follow the proceedings then came together to raise the cash bonds for the eight.

Earlier, the Central Provincial Director of Medical Services Gichuiya M’Riara had urged striking nurses to return to work as a solution was being sought over their proposed union. -Standard Digital
