Don't Feel Sorry For Me, Kibaki Says On His Exit

President Kibaki has said he would continue working in other areas after leaving State House.  He said he would not endorse his successor.

He also urged Kenyans to elect the most credible, development conscious and transparent leader as the fourth president. President Kibaki also said as he retires after a successful 10-year term, Kenyans should not be sorry for him.

“I will continue working in other areas. There is no need for anyone to feel sorry for me,” he said at his Othaya constituency.  He also warned politicians against name-calling and hate speech during their campaigns.

The President said dirty politics being played by some leaders were unnecessary, and instead advised leaders to focus on issue-based politics. Kibaki, who was addressing leaders at Othaya CDF Hall, observed there was no need for leaders to throw barbs at each other during their campaigns. “Hakuna haja ya kutaja watu, hiyo ni jambo chafu la utoto” (There is no need to mention people’s names in your campaigns, that is dirty politics and childish),” Kibaki said.

In an apparent word to Cord and Jubilee politicians who have been exposing each other in public, Kibaki said leaders should concentrate on issues beneficial to Kenyans. “It is of no use to tarnish your opponents’ name. Instead, discuss issues that are beneficial to Kenyans,” he said. “If the election period has set off, what is the need for people to tarnish each other’s name. There is no need,” he said. The President advised the leaders to sell out their policies, noting that Kenyans will elect them because of their track record and not mere politicking.

Kibaki hailed Othaya residents for their trust in him and humility, and thanked Othaya Development Association for the crucial role it has played in initiating development in the constituency. Kibaki is on a 10-day tour of the area. On Thursday, he will officially open Othaya Level Five Hospital, which is under construction. - The Standard
