A record 99,000 police officers will be deployed to man polling centres and handle security issues during Monday’s elections.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo disclosed that his department has already begun deploying the officers to their work stations.

He said the security personnel will be obtained from the Kenya police, Administration Police, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service and National Youth Service saying no imposters will infiltrate the operations.

The IG said his department has prepared a Contingency Action Plan to cover the electioneering period saying the document has been forwarded to the National Security Advisory Council for approval.

“We are adequately prepared for this exercise. We have developed a contingency action plan 2013 that has been discussed at the National Security Advisory Council,” Kimaiyo.

The police boss said the document covers areas where police will be deployed in all the polling centres and hot spot areas which are prone to election related violence.

He added, “Areas of operation in hot spots are dynamic depending on the situation at any given time and we are prepared adequately.”

The IG was speaking on Wednesday at a Nairobi hotel where 17 constitutional commission heads and independent office holders met to brief the country on the state of preparedness to handle the country’s biggest elections in history.

He said a contingent of GSU officers has already been dispatched to Kuria and Kisumu.

Kimaiyo asked those who will be voting on Monday to go home earlier on Sunday to prepare for the exercise, and urged voters to maintain calm and peace during the D-day.

He said no voter will be allowed to stay at a polling station after casting his/her ballot saying the law requires one to stay at least 400 meters away. “After voting one should just go back home,” the IG said.

The IG further warned that those who will have election disputes should resolve them through the law and avoid breaking the law in the name of protesting election results. -The Standard
