The woman locked herself and her two sons inside their rented room and set it ablaze. Neighbours said the woman, identified as Anna Nekesa, either used petrol or paraffin to burn the house.
Nekesa and her one-year-old son sustained severe burns, but her three-year-old managed to break free from the house. The two were rushed to Kapenguria District Hospital where they died as they were being treated.
Sofia Khisa, a neighbour, said she was coming back from a shop when she saw fumes coming from Nekesa’s house.Neighbours rescued the woman and the injured child from the room after putting out the fire.
“We struggled and managed to rescue the woman and the child but they were badly burned and were rushed to the hospital,” said Ms Khisa.
Grace Kaka who lives nearby said Nekesa and her husband had been quarreling frequently since they relocated to the area a month ago.
“The couple quarrel day after day and there was no peace in that house. It is unfortunate that it ended up this way,” lamented Kaka.
West Pokot OCPD David Wambua confirmed the incident and said investigation had been launched.
