Styles that rocked 2012

It has been an exciting year for many fashion lovers, and there is no doubt that 2012 has been a stylish year. There were many glamorous moments, days you stole the show with some of these trends, days you turned heads in some of these classic pieces. And how do we forget the great moments you had as you strut your stuff, posing for the cameras in these sophisticated pieces of fashion dropped on our laps?
In this edition, we will do a quick run of the many styles that rocked our lives and made us, in our own little way, catwalk queens. Happy New Year!
Retro pieces
We had a hint of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Some interpretations were rebelliously rockabilly, some were sweet;  but the most popular way we wore this trend  this year was with a sultry blend with the new.
Tribal/ethnic
Many designers used these themes; no wonder we had very many beautiful print designs that, at times, we got so overwhelmed with some styles. The bold prints and patterns embellished and adorned our dresses.
Peplum
Peplums have been on for several seasons now, but it came up stronger this year. However, we had different variations also, while some designers remained with the feminine cut, others went the extra mile by bringing out something more edgy. This year, peplums were no longer restricted to skirts or jackets, they no longer found themselves frilling out across hips and skinny-cut pants, it was even worn with tailored shorts.
Pleats
We noticed a lot of pleats in different colours and styles this year. We had the high-waisted and the maxi pleats skirt. We all explored our femininity in these flirty pieces, too.
Art Deco
Elongated silhouettes, clean angular lines and blocks of bold colour tagged with pencil-thin detailing, all depict the art deco trend that took runways by storm. For many of us who never appreciated maths class when we were younger, the graphic, geometric lines and abstract shapes on our dresses forced us to do so now.
Plunge
We all took the plunge, and for those of us who could dare, we went the extra mile by plunging a little deeper. We got dazzled on the runway with some ultra-glamorous plunge-neck gowns. No wonder in our wardrobes we all had different variations from the preppy to retro, to dark and edgy styles.
Yellow bright ‘n sunny
It was a burst of colours for us this year, from bright golden yellow to soft lemon meringue; rich mustard to neon chartreuse:  2012 got a burst of sunshine hues, there were many yellow romantic gowns, overtly cool draped ensembles and we just never got enough of the bright hues.
Metallics
These trends have been on for some time now, but it was just like we never had enough of it. The major designers offered us very enticing silvers and gold that we just couldn’t say no to. It was sure a strong fashion force for 2012 because we had so many shining and dazzling moments.
Colour blocking
Wow! We all had fun playing with so many feminine colours this year. We also had colours popping here and there. The actual fun was the contrasting acting. Sure for many fashionista, 2012 was a colourful year for us all.
Sheer/Lace
It was the battle of the fairest between the sheer and lace trends. These two were the most celebrated feminine fancy of the year.
Orange crush
Orange reigned supreme in 2012. We all had a crush on the colour that we never wanted to let go. In fact, the orange trend was an instant hit right after we caught a glimpse of it on the runway.
Coloured jeans
We also had a pop of colour on our trousers; we had them all bright and beautiful in 2012.  We all looked like beautiful candies in them.
High-waisted skirt
Inspiration for this trend came from the fifties, it came as pencil skirt, A-line, full and what have you. It was really flattering on our hips.
Statement collar
Peter Pan came calling this year right on our collars, and we just couldn’t resist embracing it. Aside Peter Pan, it was really a year for collars to shine too, because it was no longer just part of a dress. It came in different designs like embellished, studded, jeweled, patterned, layered, contrasted or cutaway: the commonality is that in 2012, the collar became a statement.
