Students of a secondary school in Awendo, Migori County, were on Sunday afternoon, suspended indefinitely for setting their bus ablaze.
The more than 500 enraged learners from Manyatta High School burnt the mini-bus in the Saturday night incident claiming it was old fashioned and unroadworthy and demanded that the school administration buys a new bus.
“We have always been ashamed of the vehicle whenever we go out and other students laugh at us,” a student said in Awendo Town.
Over 10 anti-riot police officers from Awendo Police station got to the school, only to find the vehicle reduced to its shell. However, they kept watch over the students the whole night to prevent any further damage to property.
Migori Deputy OCPD James Mwangi was quick to state that investigations into the incident had already been launched.
“We have started formal investigation into the incident and soon we will have those responsible charged accordingly,” said the Police Chief.
He added that they are yet to find out what the students used to set the bus on fire.
