Retired President Moi Pledges to Support Mudavadi's Bid

Former President Moi has pledged to support Amani coalition presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi saying he will lead campaigns in the expansive Rift Valley.

Mr Moi said he was confident Amani would win all elective seats in Baringo County and beyond. He urged Mr Mudavadi to intensify his visits to the region especially in areas where does not enjoy support.

"You have to be confident because you have numbers. Rift Valley is warming up to the Amani coalition," said Mr Moi at his Kabarak home when Amani leaders paid him a courtesy call Saturday.

"We are together and I want to wish you success. I am confident that Amani coalition will sweep all the seats in Baringo County," he said.

The former president told Amani to champion peace and shun politics of ethnicity during their campaigns saying tribalism was stifling development.

"Tribalism has been a hindrance to our development and Amani coalition should be at the forefront of championing for non-tribalised Kenya," said Mr Moi.

Mr Moi reminisced his good working relationship with the late Moses Mudavadi and said the younger Mudavadi has shown equal leadership mettle.

"I am with you fully as you travel (canvasing for votes) well. Be more active and visit areas where we have less support to attract more," said Mr Moi.

Mr Mudavadi welcomed the former president's support and declared Amani would win the March 4 General Election.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he was confident that his coalition would "turn things around" and hit out opponents for running a divisive campaign.

"As Amani coalition, we are determined and ready to fight it out with our competitors and win the elections. The two coalitions- Cord and Jubilee- are operating from a polarising standpoint," said Mr Mudavadi.

"We are confident that we shall be able to turn things around. We just want to say thank you for accepting to support us."

Mr Mudavadi's running mate Jeremiah Kioni said his decision to back the DPM's bid was informed by the need to ensure Kenya is united.

"I schooled here at Kabarak High School and the Nyayo philosophy of peace, love and unity is what informed my decision to back Musalia. We have to look beyond our tribes to foster peace and harmony in Kenya," he said.

New Ford Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa said western Kenya would vote as a block for Amani and deliver victory for Mudavadi.

"We are solidly behind Musalia. We have strong candidates from all the counties in Western Province who will deliver votes on the Amani coalition," said Mr Wamalwa.

Other leaders present included: Kanu chairman Gideon Moi, Musikari Kombo, Kipruto arap Kirwa, Nick Salat, Ken Lusaka, Paul Sang, George Khaniri, governor aspirant Trans Nzoia Bisau Kakai, Mark Too, Shadrack Manga and Amin Walji UDF's parliamentary candidate for Westlands.

Mr Mudavadi was expected to address a rally in Baringo later Saturday. - Daily Nation
