Parties' Nomination List Dominated by Politicians Seeking Political Survival

Kenyan political parties have released names of potential nominees for the National Assembly and Senate after the March, 2004 elections. The list comprises mostly of politicians who lost in their respective parties’ primaries and politicians who won the primaries but face stiff challenges in the general elections.

Among the most notables in the nomination lists are:
Musalia Mudavadi (UDF National Assembly nominee): He is the presidential candidate under the Amani coalition, but his name was included as a nominee for the National Assembly in his UDFparty. This seemed to be a security blanket should he lose the presidency. He however earlier today announced that he wanted his name removed from the as he was confident of winning the presidency.
Jeremiah Kioni (UDF National Assembly nominee): The immediate former Ndaragwa MP is Mudavadi’s running mate, and including his name assured him of political survival in case of Amani coalition’s defeat in the presidential race. He also today asked that his name be removed from the list:
Oburu Odinga (ODM National Assembly nominee): He is Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s brother and his bid for ODM nomination for the Siaya Governor seat created controversy that resulted in violence in the region after he appeared to have lost the nomination to his challenger William Oduol but maintained he was the winner. The stand-off led to both of them being disqualified by the ODM National Elections Board, and a third challenger in the seat, Otieno Okanja was given the nomination certificate. He is now almost assured to be in the National Assembly after the elections.
Margaret Wanjiru (ODM Senate nominee): The immediate former MP for Starehe and current Hosuing Assistant minister, Margaret Wanjiru was initially vying for the Nairobi governor seat but was disqualified after failing to meet the education requirements. She was instead nominated to run for the Nairobi Senate seat where she will be facing stiff competition from TNA’s Mike Mbuvi Sonko. Should the IEBC approve her nomination, she could still find her way to the senate were she to lose to Sonko.
Beth Mugo (TNA Senate nominee): The current minister for Public Health and Sanitation, she was running for the Nairobi Senate seat on a TNA ticket but dropped out of the race in December and announced her retirement from active politics on health grounds. Her retirement seems to have been short-lived as she will be a nominated senator should her name be approved by the IEBC.
Sally Kosgei (ODM Senate nominee): Sally Kosgei is the current Agriculture and was nominated by ODM to defend her Aldai parliamentary seat. Her constituency is in William Ruto’s URP’s stronghold, and her nomination is seen as meant to insulate her from political oblivion in the next five years should she lose her seat to her URP challenger.
Henry Kosgey (ODM National Assembly nominee): The ODM chairman, Henry Kosgey is the ODM candidate for the Nandi Senate seat, but like Sally Kosgei, he is running in a URP stronghold.
