L-R: Kilome legislator Harun Mwau , Juja MP William Kabogo, Kisauni MP Hassan Joho and Makadara MP Gideon Sonko Mbuvi
House Speaker Kenneth Marende has declined to expunge from the records of the House the names of four MPs mentioned in drug dealings.

While giving his ruling, Marende said no case has been made to warrant what Kilome legislator Harun Mwau had requested.

Mwau had wanted the names of MPs linked to drug trafficking to be expunged from the parliamentary Hansard as there was no evidence linking them to the illegal trade.

Mwau said a Kenya Police Service documentary aired on local TV stations had not implicated any MP.

Among those who were suspected of being drug traffickers include Mwau, Juja MP William Kabogo, Makadara MP Gideon Sonko Mbuvi and Kisauni MP Hassan Joho.

Adverse legal effects

Marende said the manner in which the matter came before the House, and its status in the House, has no adverse legal effect on either Mwau or any other MP mentioned.

“The only thing that can be said of the document is that the House is seized of the fact that the document was uttered and the House has custody of the document. No more, no less.”

The Speaker said as far as the House is concerned the position of the matter remains as set out in the Interim Report on Drug Trafficking Investigations tabled by the late Minister of State for Internal Security George Saitoti.

No evidence

The report, prepared by a team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Alfred Ombaba said there is no evidence to sustain charges against the four MPs and a Mombasa businessman named by Saitoti as the ones mentioned in the US embassy report.

The report recommends, among other measures, the profiling of suspects of drug-trafficking, all entry points in the country be supplied with sniffer dogs as well as continuous surveillance on known and suspected drug barons and peddlers. - The Standard
