Pope Benedict XVI Set to Join Twitter

After close to 10 months of speculation as to whether indeed Pope Benedict XVI would join the fastest growing social media site in the world, following an earlier statement in February, the Vatican has announced that the head of the largest church on Earth is set to join Twitter today.

The Pope, who favours longhand writing, may not make all the Twitter updates on his own, but he will have to approve each one, the Vatican said at the earlier announcement. The independent state already has its very own Twitter account, boasting over 100,000 followers, and the Pope already has experience with ‘tweeting’ as he sent this message mid last year:

“Dear Friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.” This was at the launch of the Vatican Information portal.

The Vatican Press service confirmed late last week that indeed Pope Benedict XVI will be present on Twitter. “All related information will be reported on Monday 3rd December at a press conference to be held in the Holy See Press Office.”

The Pope has steadily urged Catholics to embrace new media like social networks and it will be interesting to see other religious leaders such as Cardinal John Njue open a Twitter account.
