There was drama at a Nyeri primary school after a pupil confessed to be behind increased cases of ‘evil spirit attacks’ during a prayer session.
Learning was stopped at the Mt Kenya Salvation Primary School as dozens of parents and religious leaders held the prayers for the pupils after about 38 pupils cases were reported.
The afternoon prayers were being held in the school field when the class six girl fell down and disclosed that she was behind the attacks.
The religious leaders and parents congregated around the girl who tried to fight them before she was subdued.
They prayed and poured holy water on the girl in a classroom where she lay on the ground shivering and writhing.
Her voice became hoarse when a religious leader asked her to say “Jesus saves” before she fell on the ground crying.
The school Board of Governors chairman Mwangi Muturi said the girl said she had been ordered by evil spirits to deliver 15 girls to them.
“During the prayers she called out names of eight pupils who fainted wherever they were. She claims that she has already delivered eight and seven are still remaining,” said Mr Muturi.
The headmaster Mrs Mary Muriithi confirmed that cases of pupils fainting in the school were on the increase adding that it was a new phenomenon.
She said that the school had organized to have psychiatrists counsel them saying that she did not know the cause of the hysteria.
“I have been taking them to the hospital after they regain consciousness but doctors find nothing wrong with them. We had been advised to take them for psychiatry care at the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital before today’s unfolding,” she added.
Parents asked teachers to be very keen on pupils and take not of any unusual behaviours to prevent such kind of attacks.
One parent, Paul Muchiri said that teachers spend a lot of time with the pupils in schools adding that they should be able to detect anything unusual with their behaviour.
He said that he had never heard of such a case and told other parents to keenly observe their children’s behaviour.
