Businessman killed as crime spirals in Kisumu

A 32-year-old businessman was killed on Tuesday night as the insecurity situation in Kisumu worsened.

Phanuel Marwa’s body was found on a feeder road along Kisumu-Kakamega road in Mamboleo area, on Tuesday night. Marwa is reported to have been hijacked at around 8pm.


He runs a security firm in Kisumu and is said to have left his residence at 7pm.

“He was dropping some security guard at his station and left after he received a call,” said the deceased’s wife, Naomi Wambura, at the family’s residence in Mamboleo Estate.

Wambura said at 9pm, she tried to reach her husband in vain.

His death brings to three people killed by thugs in the last four days in the lakeside town.




On Monday, Shem Kwega, a businessman-cum-politician was shot and later succumbed to his injuries at Aga Khan Hospital. His wife was also shot and is admitted at the facility. The killing sparked protests in Kisumu that left three people dead.

On Saturday, renowned researcher Dr Joseph Odhiambo was hacked to death in Tom Mboya area and his body left at the parking lot of his rental house.

A security guard who was with Marwa when he was attacked sustained cut wounds and is admitted at Nyanza Provincial Hospital.
