AFC Leopards are the first local club to launch their own television station in the country to air on local pay television station. They are following the lead of some of the top European clubs who are known to have their own stations already. AFC partnered with Mwananchi group who are known to be the owners of Zuku to launch the new program. They announcement of the new station, Ingwee Tv was done yesterday.
The new television station will be aired on Zuku Sports and this is set to start streaming live as from next month therefore giving a chance to all the club fans and supporters from East and Central Africa the privilege of watching AFC matches. Mwananchi director Programming, Hannelie Bekker said the deal will run for three years and it is worth 23 million shillings.
AFC will be paid 8 million while the rest of the money will go towards production. You can expect 36 episodes in the start which will mostly cover behind the scene prior to the clubs matches. The programming will start with a 30 minutes weekly magazine show. Bekker went on to praise the club saying she feels great being associated with it since it is a very organised club.” They have shown good organisations since they started negotiations and something more interesting an enthusiastic fan base”. she was quoted saying.
Bekker says their association with AFC Leopards is a way of developing local talents in the country. They had also given out 50 million the previous week to support the basket ball league. The partnership will not infringe the television rights currently owned by Supersport to air the club matches live.Zuku further said they are open to more clubs who would like to make this move and follow the Leopards.
AFC Leopards vice chairman, said the money they get from Zuku will be used to better the lives of the players so that they can also up their game on the pitch. He further says it is a marketing strategy and has been a goal of the team to make them the biggest team in Africa. We hope that this move will help AFC Leopards achieve their goals.
