Kenya Native Recognized As One of Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2012





A professor at Harvard University named as one of Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2012 by Italian publication Lo Spazio della Politica. Professor Calestous Juma, a native of Kenya, appeared at position 69 in the list, with the publication saying his “writings on innovation in Africa enhance the understanding of the region which is essential for the economic and political growth of this decade” led to his inclusion in the list.

Prof Juma is the Director of the Science, Technology and Globalization Project at Harvard University’s Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He also serves as co-chair of the African Union's High-Level Panel on Science, Technology and Innovation.

Among his other high profile roles and achievements are:
  • Head of the Harvard’s Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Agricultural Innovation in Africa Project.
  • Founding Director of the African Centre for Technology Studies in Nairobi.
  • A jury member of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
  • Former Chancellor of the University of Guyana.
  • Serves on the board of the International Journal of Technology and Globalisation
  • Serves on the board of the International Journal of Biotechnology.
  • Author of the book The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2011.
He holds a PhD in Science and Technology Policy Studies, and has numerous publications in science, technology and environment. He has also won numerous international awards for his work on sustainable development.
